Homework Assignments are posted here. Unless otherwise noted, the
paper copies supercede this page.
- Week 1
(Assigned 8/14/2012, Due 8/21/2012)
1.
Make certain your UK email account
(username@uky.edu) is working. Information on using this account is in your student
handbook and your username is on your information card. Before the start of class on the due date, you should send me an
email from your
UK account with your best explanation of why you chose
your major and what you believe graduates with your degree will
do in the workplace. (Hint: if you do your reading ahead of time
your answer can be better informed. It should not replicate the
discussion in the text.)
2.
Join AIChE (both the local chapter and the national
organization) and provide your member number (if available) or a
copy of your registration confirmation. If you would prefer not
to join, you may instead submit a note explaining your
preference. Expect me to discuss your preference not to join
with you!
Tuesday (8/14):
Ch.1, Concepts in Engineering (CiE)
Tuesday (8/21):
Ch.2, CiE
(HW1 Due, HW2 Assigned)
Week 2
(Assigned 8/21/2012, Due 8/28/2012)
Pick 3 chemical engineering courses
from the chemical engineering curriculum and read their
descriptions. These descriptions are available on the Web (http://www.uky.edu/Registrar/bulletinCurrent/courses/CME.pdf).
In one page or
less (double spaced, 12 pt font), describe how you would use the
information from these courses in your “dream” job.
You will submit
a printout in class, but also email the Word file to me as an
attachment. Credit will be given for following instructions!
Tuesday (8/28):
Ch.3, CiE
(HW2 Due, HW3 Assigned)
Week 3
(Assigned 8/28/2012, Due 9/4/2012)
From your Concepts in Engineering Text:
- 3.1c, d, & e. Justify your answers.
- 3.3 (Use table 3.1)
Assignment Objectives:
- Classify and analyze conflicts based on moral and
ethical considerations
- Perform a quantitative analysis to aid in decision
making
Tuesday (9/04):
Engineering Student Survival Guide:
Ch. 5, 6
(HW3 Due, HW4
Assigned)
Week
4
(Assigned 9/4/2012, Due 9/11/2012)
From your Concepts in Engineering Text:
-
Complete the
attached schedule with your current obligations. You should have
something scheduled for all times, whether it be “sleep”,
“recreation”, “homework”, or some other activity. Count the
number of hours spent in class and the number of hours you
allocate for studying and doing homework. What aspects of your
life could you alter if you needed to do so to improve your
grades?
-
It is important to
set goals to assist in making decisions on how to invest your
time. What are your goals for the next three months? four years?
Ten years? Submit a list of your goals for this semester, the
next 4 years (or 3 years if you are a sophomore), and the next
10 years.
Assignment Objectives:
-
Identify where you spend your time hand how you can be more
effective and efficient with the time you have
-
Develop a list of short-term and long-term goals to assist with
decision making and time management
Tuesday (9/11):
Concepts in Engineering:
pp.
146-148
(HW4 Due, HW5 Assigned)
Week 5
(Assigned 9/11/2012, Due 9/18/2012)
Do a search on a technical topic that interests you in engineering. Since everyone will need to have a different topic, you
must get your topic approved by me prior to beginning your search.
You will do the same search on InfoKat, Compendex (Engineering
Index), and SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts). Some possible
topics include:
Reformulated gasoline (1998 or later)
Tire recycling
Plastics recycling
Chemical weapons disposal
Freon replacement
Answer the following questions for your homework submission:
What topic did you search?
Using InfoKat
How many “hits” did you get?
List the title, call number, and location for one of the books that
looks most interesting to you.
Using Compendex/Engineering Index
How many “hits” did you get?
Write the citation for one of the best articles from Compendex
Using Chemical Abstracts/SciFinder Scholar
How many “hits” did you get?
Find one of the articles you find using the electronic journal
resources UK provides. Print only the first page and submit it with
your answers.
Which database gave you the best information for your search, and
why?
Assignment Objectives:
Tuesday (9/18):
Resume writing and job search (ESSG Ch 8-10)
(HW5 Due, HW6 Assigned)
Week
